Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
